they nfl uses special "k-balls" during field goals, extra points, punts, and kickofffs. basically, they are footballs straight off the assembly line that teams dont get to break in before they're used, so they're really slippery. no one seems to know why the NFL uses k-balls, and no one seems to like them. they would explain romo's slip-up, as well as Cinncy, goof against the broncos in week 16.
As far as the super bowl, i'm not sure what the deal was. when the ball gets a buildup of mud on it, it does get slick, but you'd think that Grossman would be able to handle the ball better. i'd understand if it were rex's first game, but throughout the season, he and Kruetz should have figured out how to execute the center- quarterback exchange.
it is possible that rex had been nursing an injured hand. that would explain the subpar performances of the season as well as throughout the playoffs.
football teams often replace the game ball, and if the bears replaced the ball every few plays, they may have ran out of conditioned footballs, and may have been forced to use new ones.

The balls vary from high school, college and NFL. The QB's get to pick the balls they like out of all the game balls. Kickers do not get that luxury, so when it comes to extra points and field goals, the snap holder has to deal with what he gets. As for the Romo situation, I think it was nerves. During the SB, it was obviously weather related...though I think Rex reverted to form too.

Age old problem for the NFL goes back about thirty years. in the playoffs they use new balls and they are supposed to be hand rubbed for about 45 minutes prior to game time to get the glaze off them. The past three years, that prep time has been cut down to 15 minutes. So, yeah the balls are much slicker and pron to being fumbled.

In the Super Bowl they change the ball every play but they don't do that in every game. Kicking balls are different from the regular footballs and are a bit more slick because they aren't used every play.
