Remember seeing/hearing "Please Stand By" whenever there was a technical problem on tv? I haven't seen one of those in ages.
They'd just broadcast that message, play some funny, generic music & have a loop voice recording saying "We are experiencing technical difficulties. Please Stand By!"
Those were the days before 24 hour tv! :)

I also remember the Star Spangled Banner just before the station went off the air for the night.

Yes, I do remember that! Guess most technical difficulties were fixed!?
Remember when stations played the National Anthem, signed off, and the test pattern appeared?

Oh yes, I remember those days. And as someone else observed, I remember TV stations actually signed off and began the day with the Star Spangled Banner. These days, we have infomercials instead of a sign off.

It wasn't always used just for technical problems. Bob Hope had Jane Russell on his show and commented on how great her legs were. He told her she ought to name them. She replied that she had named the left one Christmas and the right one New Years. Bob got a sly grin on his face and asked if he could come up between the holidays. Immediately it was blank screen time followed by the "Technical Difficulties. Please Stand By" sign.

Man, I have not seen one of those is forever, or when the station would shut down at a certain time and they would play the star spangled banner, then that that beep noise and the crazy looking bullseye on the screen.

Yeah, it kind of makes you miss the days before 5000 cable channels, HDTV and TIVO. Long Live Betamax!!! =)
There is an old movie called "Amazon Women On The Moon" that has many funny examples of the please stand by thing. Check it out!
