I have never heard of a "free" key-logger, and I have never heard of one that can't be found by a trusty virus scan. a key-logger is a virus inserted into your computer when you play a multiplayer game, or use a forum like Yahoo answers. a key-logger will not affect you computer seriously unless it brings another form of infection with it. key-loggers will typically make you say something, or ask something, or even do something if you are playing a game, that you did not tell it to do, like asking a question on Yahoo answers, or giving an answer that you didn't want to put. to get rid of one you should run a virus Scan like you said would possibly not work, and then run a disk cleanup and a defrag. after that make sure you change your password and your recovery questions if you can. I have heard of virus scanners however, which will find the virus, and destroy it without telling you anything about it, so that could be what's happening.

No it should be concealed, unless of course the site you used is a red site. The following sites are reported as safe by my application:

www.actualkeylogger.com

www.free-keylogger.com

BE VERY CAREFULL USING GOOGLE I DID A SEARCH AND HUNDRED OF SITE REPORTED AS RED. THE SITES ABOVE ARE SAFE.
