Ok, let's see...
Reasons:
Your hard drive is full of files
Your files are scattered (fragmented)
You have too many programs running
You have spyware
You have viruses
Your Windows files are cluttered with junk
Solutions:
Hard drive is full of files
Go into your "My Documents" and delete files you don't want anymore.
Find files in your "My Documents" that you don't use but want to keep - burn them onto CD / DVD then delete them off your hard drive.
Go into your "Add/Remove Programs" and remove programs you don't want anymore.
Start > Control Panel > Add / Remove Programs
Your files are too scattered (fragmented)
This happens over time - defrag your computer.
Start > My Computer > right-click on your hard drive > Properties > Tools (tab) > Defragment.
Too many programs running
Start > Run... > type in "msconfig" without the quotes.
Go into the last tab. This is a list of all the programs that load when you start your computer. Some are needed, some aren't.
Go through the list, unchecking programs like itunes and msn messenger. Reboot your computer.
There will be a box that says you've changed something. Click on the check box and click [OK}
Spyware
Download, install and update this program:
Spybot Search & Destroy - http://www.spybot.info/en/mirrors/index.html
Run the scan, and remove everything it finds.
Go into the "Immunize" section and run that too.
Viruses
Download, install and update this program:
ClamWin - http://www.clamwin.com/
Run the scan, and remove everything it finds.
Windows is cluttered with junk
Download, install and update this program:
Ccleaner - http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/
Run both scans, and read through what it finds. Most you can just remove with no issues. Go to the second tab and do that scan as well.

There can be many causes for a general slowdown of your computer. Some are not necessarily security or virus related. You should check all these items to be sure.
1. Run an updated virus scan.
Or Scan for Viruses online.
Sometimes it is a good idea to run more than one to ensure nothing is missed:
Kaspersky Online Virus Scanner
Panda ActiveScan
Trend Micro House Call
Symantec Security Check
2. Run the Microsoft® Windows® Malicious Software Removal Tool
3. Check this link:
Do you have parasites?
4. Run Ad-Aware (free version)
Update if you already have it.
AND
Spybot (free version)
Update if you already have it.
You may want to use both of these tools to be sure all spyware is gone.

Also try the easy done series at www.leeindy.com and you can check what programs are operating on start up and eliminate some of them, quite easy to follow. Also Ccleaner.com is a good registry cleaner that will remove unwanted crap on your pc. Have you recently upgraded to IE7, if so. I bet that's your problem
