Look it at this way. Defragmenting your data on your harddrive. Is the same as when you walk into a really messy room. And you are looking for something. but obviously you cant find it due to the mess. Defragmenting is the same thing.
It takes data and organizes. moves files in the correct order. etc etc.
Defragmenting your harddrive. specially the C: one, will improve your computer performance, among boot time. and the time your harddrive takes to seek files.
so a defrag every once a month if ur a casual user of ur pc is recommended. if you use it a lot, more like 1-2 weeks.

I do, but it's not absolutely necessary unless your data is EXTREMELY fragmented. The performance benefit is minimal, though it extends the life of the drive by reducing movement of the read/write heads when writing or retreiving data. Anyone that claims that a defrag provides a significant performance boost is probably someone who does not have much experience with PC optimizing (and thinks Norton products are good software). ;)
I defrag initially after installing an operating system so that the page file can be as close as possible to the start of the drive. After that, I do it whenever I install a significantly large application such as a game or video editing software. Otherwise, I let it go for a couple of months.

You'll get lots of people giving conflicting advice on this.
Some people think it does more harm than good doing a defrag too often and putting all that stress on a disk.
Others think that if you don't defrag very regularly then you're putting lots of stress on the disk day-to-day.
What you can do is look closely at the analysis. If you find that the majority of fragmentation is on one or two really big files that you hardly use, then there's not much point defragmenting even if the display has a big chunk of red because of those large files.

I defrag about once every week, I've set my computer for that reminder every Friday. It helps a lot especially when you have a lot of data, you do business, and/or you play games, etc. If I get really lazy, I defrag about once every other week. Well worth it.

It’s good to do it from time to time. You see, your computer stores information in random segments of the hard drive, when the hard drive is almost empty there’s no problem the file reading is easy. When it starts to get full it’s not harder but slower for the computer to find all those segments dispersed all over the hard drive (Why? That’s the way HD works) at the end, when you defragmenter your disk you put those random segments in contiguous locations making it easier for the machine to put them together and making it a little faster. It’s recommendable to do it if you save a lot of stuff.

Restart in risk-free mode and do it then, to flow into risk-free mode, you restart your laptop and while the emblem comes up, initiate tapping F8 key, till it lots, then defrag, then restart. solid success.
