If your friend has them as badly as you say, get to a drugstore and buy a specialist shampoo just for this job. I believe there is also a device like an electronic comb which shocks the lice, if you're opposed to chemicals.

Clean all bed linen, brushes, combs, hats; vaccuum the sofa. Have everyone in the house also wash with special shampoo.

And watch out for re-infestation, as the shmpoo will kill the lice but it only takes one stray egg and the cycle starts again.

Good luck.

There is no other way. You have to use the shampoo and spray everything in the house. If you can't wash it or spray it, put it in a plastic bag and seal it up tight for two weeks.
You can try all the home remedies you like, but things like vinegar and tea tree oil are preventative measures only. It won't work if she has them really bad. She really has to pay the money for the shampoo.

Sorry but your friend will NEED to buy the special shampoo sold in any drug store, wash linens, hats, clothing etc in hot water. They won't go away on their own, they will spread to others. If I were you I'd follow the same routine, depending on how close the two of you are, you may catch them as well. Good luck.

The ONLY way to get rid of lice is to use the lice shampoo/conditioner, and the spray for your house and bed...and everything you come into contact with pretty much.

Spray, shampoo and comb with a fine toothed comb. It'll help you get them out of your head.

There is another way.... all the people I know use "Frontline". Get this from your Veterinarian. It is a tick and flea repeller for dogs and works super well for people.
