An employee is paid by the company they work for, fill out a W-4 and an I-9 and receive a paycheck. An independent contractor has an agreement or contract with a company to provide services under certain conditions. You decide.

What is the $4.50/hr that you have to turn in at the end of the month? I think that you are an independent contractor. There are no taxes withheld on your behalf by the company. You do not work on-site, with a fixed schedule and it appears as though you do not receive any employment benefits (insurance, etc.).

Do you work at the hiring agent's office? Do you use their equipment? Do they dictate your hours? If not, you're an independent contractor and you can file a Schedule C tax return that can take a deduction for all expenses including the $4.50/hr you pay for the scheduling, your mileage and most anything else you can show is valuable to running your "business". You are responsible for the self employment tax and for making sure you are current with your tax obligations. For any additional information, I suggest you see an Enrolled Agent or CPA tax person. This is a tax status.

Independent contrator by definition. The $4.50 per hour worked you send them is the feee you're paying them for hooking you up with contract work. You are liable for all your own taxes, but you probably CAN deduct that $4.50/hr you pay them as an expense against your taxes. Talk to a tax preparer or accountant.
