How about writing a persuasive essay about something like:
-kids needing later curfews.
-kids needing more allowance.
-why your favorite sport is the best.
-why your favorite activity is the best.
Good luck!
Edit: I suggested these since I remember having to do one in school and I remember being handed a list of prompts.

im 14 and in 8th grade too! what a coincedince
any way... i had to wrie a persuasive essay in 6th grade so you're lucky you r doin it in 8th grade... i did mine about persuading my mom to give me my own room but that wont work if u already have your own room so here's some other ideas:
persuade the school board to change the yucky school lunches(if your school's lunches are like my school's...this will be a good one and many other kids will agree with you)
persuade students to go out for a club or other after-school activity
persuade everyone to start a fundraiser for some needy charity in your local community
persuade your principal to let you have a school dance (that's what we just did a few weeks ago)
sorry-cant think on any more right now so i better go!!!
i hope i helped you!

Think of a hot topic that you enjoy. When I did this topic it was a few years ago when racial profiling was a hot topic. The more you enjoy the topic the easier it will be to write about it. What do you see in the news that peaks your curosity?
There are so many to choose from...
Iraq war
Iran debacle
Korea weapons fiasco
China - there was a woman working on human rights for AIDS victims (she is Chinese) who is being detained in her home by the Chinese government. They want to prevent her coming to the US so she can speak about AIDS in China.
Darfur and the genocide
If it were me I'd do the Darfur genocide or the woman in China. I have a passion for human rights so it'd be easy for me to do.
Hope this helps!

What is a situation you would like? Longer lunch periods? Smaller classrooms? Better food in the cafeteria? Think about some good reasons for this change and put it in your paper so that you can pesuade others to agree with you.

its Black History Month. Write something to remember those who fought for Black Rights/Freedom. that would seem pretty great for your class, an open mind and the teacher will see how involved and great mind you have.
