My foster child was caught chewing tobacco at school. She is 16 and a loner. If I put her in her room, she would be very content reading, writing, or sleeping. She never goes anywhere with friends and so grounding her would not help. I also cannot make her chew a whole can as she is foster and it would backfire on me. What should I do?
***No I am not controlling or religous. She is suffering from depression but still needs to know right from wrong. She is not a regular chewer and did it to impress her friends. I can't provide her with tobacco by law. If I explain it to her she doesn't care. Help!

Take away her privacy, if she is always locked up in her room and she enjoys it, make it a grounding to keep the door open at all times, more family and talking time (to talk about problems with school and depression) and ground her for 2 weeks to get it in her head that chewing tabacco or any other tabacco products are completely out of the question. Also talk to her about how bad it is for her and say something like "I love you so much and would never want any of these things that tabacco can do to happen to you."

Well. if that's all she's doing, then you really don't have a lot to worry about. Probably a 1 x incident. From you description, she doesn't sound like a bad kid at all. I would give her a chance to redeem herself and make her write an essay on the effects of tobacco chewing. That way, she is aware of what it can do to a person.Maybe take away computer, phone, or tv privileges for a day or two.

Uhm. I'm not sure.
My only idea is to make her work an unpleasant job (for no money). For example, she could be a janitor at her school but the school would keep the money.

Sorry if my advice wasn't all that great. Good luck

Get some pictures of mouth and gum cancer patients. Make her look at them and write a paper about what she sees. Is she being treated for depression? It sounds like she has many problems.

raising foster children is different than our own we have rules we have to fallow and guidelines
you have the right to search her things for the chew before and after school the pic idea is OK but I'm sure she has seen them and is not bothered by it you have to find something she will hate to do like have family time where she has to be the center of attention if you have younger kids she will have to explain to them why chew is bad for you and why they should never do it she can volunteer at after school programs for younger kids
