The name mouse, coined at the Stanford Research Institute, derives from the resemblance of early models (in which the cord was attached to the rear part of the device, suggesting the idea of a tail) to the common eponymous rodent.

Only cause it looks like a mouse.
The thing that disturbs my senses is that I seem to be pointing the rear end of the mouse towards the computer instead of the head. The wire (which I think of as it's tail) connecting the mouse to the computer should be on the other end.
I have contacted the manufactures of mouses (the plural is not meese in any situation) but the all seem to ignore my earnest effort to correct a seemingly anatomic error.
Anyone who feels strongly about this may send me a small donation in cash only...no checks or stamps please..and I will fight for our rights to point the head of the mouse to the computer instead of the butt (pardon my coarse language.)

I would imagine because it looked like a mouse. The 2 buttons were the eyes and the cord was the tail.

The first ones developed were small, palm-sized, and had a cable coming out of the back, resembling a mouse.

http://www.ideafinder.com/history/inventions/story044.htm Goes back to a Mr. Englebert, and MS-DOS. ms sort of sounds like mouse. And the word mouse was already being used. And none of them seem to know why they were doing what they were doing. Exciting times they were.

Because it resembles a real mouse: it scurries around your desktop and it has a "tail" (the cord). No fooling!
