Factors that prevent peace today are the same as it was hundreds of years ago.
Basically, people have never been able to get along. Yes religious differences and racism add fodder to the fire.
Mostly, it is basic human arrogance. We feel that our way is always better than some one else's, and we continually try to get people to aquiesce to our own ways.
Also, it is our basic, primal greedy nature. We want what someone else has and will stop at nothing to get it. (I want your land, oil, women, natural resources, etc...)
Further, it is a thirst for power, the need for domination. (World domination. If we can't have the power, we'll do whatever we can to keep you from getting it!)

Most sociological issues can be boiled down to two things: boredom and fear. I think that both of these factors prevent peace in the world today, and have prevented world peace from the beginning of time. These to factors can easily be applied to war.

Unless every mother of every child, especially sons, knows how to build a person who is absolutely committed to peaceful resolution of conflicts there will always be aggession, and there will always be the response to aggression, which is more aggression.
Since mothers cannot and do not raise their children in a vacuum and societies that are of equal commitment to peaceful resolution of conflicts their children grow up to make up the very kind of society that prevents mother from being able to raise their children to be committed to non-aggressive ways of resolving conflict.

I think the answer lies in most of the questions I see.
It is really difficult to keep positive in times of crisis.
The best example I can give is when 9/11 happened.
People freak out. They can't keep positive and just react, rather than trying to keep positive. There are very few individuals that can keep positive in crisis situations. I respect them for that.
People who can't keep positive in crisis situations are more likely to react in a violent manner.

Research the bible. We, as a society, are fulfilling the prophecies in the bible! Read the Book of Revelations.....it tells it all! Our destiny is inevitable.
Good luck on your speech!
