I think it's a combination of whatever has always caused conflict throughout time with modern advanced technologies that just make the tensions more complex or urgent. For example people have always been fighting over resources or ideology but when nukes are involved, it is serious because they can end all life on earth. Even the suspicion of a country trying to acquire nuclear armaments can start wars. When that country or organization is known to be religiously fanatic then it is a more difficult situation because people who attach their political agendas to religious absolutes are almost impossible to negotiate with. It's like they are on a path to mass destruction. So in this matter basically there's not much new to global conflict in the modern age other than the fact that only a few attacks between two countries could spell the end for almost every species on the planet. People whatever their agenda know they can get a grasp on this kind of power and that creates new tension.
Also, maybe it's because the old religions that made more sense in the situations of the ancient world are colliding with the reality of the modern age.

History.
Kosovo was invaded to stop the Serbs ethnically clensing the Kosovans, after the Croats had declared and gained independance
But the Croats wanted independance because half of them had supported Hitler during the second world war, and the other half, were partisans under the Serb King. Tito, murdered the partisan leader of the croats upon the establishment of Yugoslavis, and so there was a rift.
But the fift was started in 1914 by the Serbs who wanted independance from the Austrian controlled Croats and Bosnians, so assinated Arch Duke Ferdinand.
But that conflict had started in 1913, when Serbia had run rampage through its neighbours, cutting off the heads of the muslims, and Catholics with Russian weapons.
But that conflict had started when Britian and France had attacked the crimean 1850 to stop Russia expanding into Turkey.
But that coflict had started when Britian, France and Russia had attacked the Turkish Navy at Navorone (1827) to support Greek independance. The turks then went on a rampage through the Balkans cutting of serb and croat heads.
But that conflict started when Napoleon had recruited Croat mercenairies to attack the Ottoman turks in 1815.
But that conflict had started when the Turks invaded the Holy Roman empier in 1740's maching on Vienna, and taking bosnia and Kosovo fro the Austro-Hungarians.
But that battle started when the Turks had defeated the Byzantium empire in 1500
but that battle started when the Roman empire split into Catholic and Orthadox empired, with a line down the river Mostar in modern Bosnia.
Long memory, blood grudges and religion

It has always been the same reason, Man/Woman and the need that the Human race has in being in control. If we were to respect one another and not have prejudice there would be no need for war. Competition to do better than others to the point of doing something that could be injurious to another. I am not the same race, religion, social class, and ethnic background.

Religion has always been a major cause of war, greed is also. I don't think the causes ever really change.

What exactly are you asking? It's sounds like you're asking why the Spanish are no longer killing and exploiting indigenous peoples any longer?
