According to a poll taken of historians about 5 or 6 years ago it is a tie. Both Abraham Lincoln and Franklin Roosevelt are considered the best. They both were president during the worst times in our history and handled it well.
Side note: Teddy Roosevelt, George Washington, and Thomas Jefferson are in the top few spots. FYI Reagan is rated in the middle.

i'd have to say george washington.
washington was a successful british citizen and soldier who sacrificed everything in order to help guide our nation through it's birth.
washington did this, all the while, thinking in terms of behaving like a gentleman - this was very important to him.
he gave our young nation dignity and class.
but these things are not the most important thing that washington gave to these united states.
washington COULD have been a dictator - the nation was his for the taking - what passed for congress and many of the states basically invited washington to be the first king of the usa and he declined.
his devotion to the principles that this nation stood for even before the nation existed is inspiring to this day.
i think most americans don't appreciate quite what a great man washington was.
to give you an idea of what a tower of a human being washington was i'll quote napoleon bonaparte - who's last words were:
"they wanted me to be another washington..."

Eleanor Roosevelt. She managed to run the country, keeping her husbands illness a total secret. She made all Govt. decisions, well before womens lib. and nobody was the wiser until they were out of office. Her husband has been accredited many times as being the best president in history of the US and for most of those reasons were her doing.

Its like all things in life, everyone has a different opinion on who is the best. Some people think we should just stand and talk about it and let the terrorists due what they do best. Other people think....that's enough of their blowing up our buildings and killing our people and were going to stand up and at least try to do something about it. Win or loose, were going to try! That's what gets my respect.

General George Washington...the first is always the best..he gave so much for this country..if he lost the war he would have been hanged for treason..he gambled it all and won. you have to respect that..he didn't have to fight at all..he would live life as a Brit..and still had money and slaves..and a good life..

JFK!
After recieving 'Operation Northwood' from Chairman of the Joint Cheifs of Staff, General Lyman Louis Lemnitzer, He refused this proposel and fired General Lemnitzer as Chairman. I personally think that this was the turning point in the mind of JFK. When his real love for the American people shined......Very shortly after.....JFK was killed.
