I tend to think it's a bit of both. The game (like all games) is pressing buttons. But, like all other games, pressing them at the right time, in the right order can make or break your battle.

Like when you are a healer in an instance with a group. If you don't press your heal button in time, you could potentially lose your tank and the entire group could wipe.

Or, on the other side, if you are the tank and don't grab aggro with the right combination of button pushing, then you could lose it's attention and send it right into your less armoured friends.

That, and breaking an spell cast with good timing with "earth shock" "sheild bash" or any other interupt abilites really makes you smile, and can turn the tables in a close fight against another caster.

Happy gaming!

At level 41 you're no longer a novice - you have shown a good amount of fighting ability to get there. Knowing your class' capabilities and tailoring them via your talent tree is key to knowing what to use when. I've got 6 toons and each has strengths and weakness' and a unique fighting style. I'd say the shadow priest melts faces faster than my druid (feral), rogue (assisination), mage (frost), warrior (fury) or hunter (beast/Marksmanship).

What class is your toon? How is it spec'd?

WoW is not "real-time" action as with many first person shooters. I am with a guild that plays both WoW and BF2 - very different approaches.

WoW characters auto attack so yes it's pretty much pressing the buttons at the right time. But when you have a big party and your a cleric or mage you'll be pressing buttons and in the action all the time. You'll be happy it does it automatically for you at those times.

you have to figure out a combination of powers(using talent points) to maximize your fighting potential. for instance i have a 69 mage and i can do a 30k base crit every few mins.
