The number of the period tells you the highest energy level which has electrons for those elements.
The elements in period 1 (H and He) have valence e- in the first energy level where n = 1.
The elements in period 2 (Li, Be, B, C, N, O, F, Ne) have valence e- in the second energy level where n = 2.
The elements in period 3 (Na, Mg, Al, Si, P, S, Cl, Ar) have valence e- in the thirds energy level where n = 3.

all the elements in the 1st period have 1 valence e-
all the ones in the 2nd have 2
then u skip the ones that are in the middle
the 13 have 3
the 14, 4
and so on until the 18th they have a full shell so thats why i hate them
btw all the e- want a full shell so they will try and steal or give some away until the valence shell is full
