England does not really have a capital city - London is the capital of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. However, it is considered the capital of England as well.
At the beginning of a unified England in 857 King Egbert set his capital at Winchester. It remained the capital until the Norman Conquest and King William I (William the Conquerer) was declaired King of England in both Winchester and London.
Winchester enjoyed the status as joint capital city until the mid 14th century when London was made the single official capital.

England only became a country in 927 AD (and only a real country in 1066 with the Norman Conquest). Since this time London has always been the capital. St Albans (or Verulanium) and others had all been capitals prior to this, but never of 'England'

Winchester was the capital of Wessex - the West Saxons. England was divided into several Kingdoms - Kent - East Saxons (Essex) - Mid Saxons (Middlesex) South Saxons (Sussex) - Mercia - Nothumbria. There was an ancient British town on the site of London long before the Romans. Brentford in Middlesex was once an important town due to the shallow and wide nature of the Thames making crossing easier.

I think that Winchester was was England's capital some time in the 1000s. It was definitely that capital of the Kingdom of Wessex before that.
