No, of course you can't, the reason being that there is no mechanism to clear cheques between UK based and US based banks. It matters not whether the cheque is written in sterling or in dollars. You will have to ask your bank to do an electronic transfer for which they will charge you. I have had to send money to my brother in Australia and this is the system we had to use.

You need to contact your bank to find out if they can do an automatic currency converstion. (Most can.) Which means, you write the check out in American Dollars and send it over. (Make sure you get the amount correct!)

As long as your cheque has all of your bank's contact information, there will be no problem. (Apart from your friend maybe getting held up at the bank for a few minutes while they contact the other institution.)

Important: Do not write the check in pounds or any other foreign currency. Most banks, (BofA for example) will charge up to $50 per check to cash foreign currency.

A Trading bank will convert your currency and suggest the correct form of monetry transfer - this will be determined by whats available where the person is located.

go to your local bank and purchase a cashier's check in US currency, then send it.
Your recipient will have a problem cashing a check in the US that was written on a UK bank account unless it's a cashier's check.
A better way to transfer money internationally is to use a Paypal account.

Of course. If your account is in pounds, the US bank will make the exchange into dollars. If your account is already in dollars, it makes no difference. If your cheque is in an English bank, your cheque form will specify pounds anyway!

You can send it, but they won't be able to cash it.
You should use international money order or something like that.
