I gave my dog to this lady who I hardly knew because of a friend's reference. The lady said she'd give me one of my dog's puppies, but wouldn't give her back even with a replacement! At the time I gave her to the lady I felt she might be about to go back into heat, but the lady says it only happens like once a year.... That's bogus.
How often is it that smaller breed dogs go into heat? Should I take her to court for her promise to give me a puppy?

Dogs usually go into heat every 6 months. Your case probably wouldn't stand up in a court of law without any documentation.

There's a breeders trick. Place your hand under your dogs tummy to support her and control her from moving or sitting. Then gently tickle her an inch below her anus area. When a female is ready to mate her tail will move from side to side. Practice conscientious breeding. Breeding a female everytime she is in heat takes a lot out of her and should not be done. Bringing more puppies into the world for profit when there are 12 million dogs put down in America alone is each year should be reason enough to reconsider breeding another dog.

Most dogs, after they first come in heat, will come in heat an average of 2 times a year. My friend raises Poms. she gave me one, hence the name Poppy in my ID, and she has 2 litters a year. If you don't have a signed agreement, anything on paper, forget court. Sorry!

Usually the norm is twice a year. Good luck. Yes I would take her to court it's a verbal contract. All you have to do is convince the judge of this verbal contract, and I think by just giving her this dog for nothing no money and not knowing her could be pretty convincing.

I don't know breeds specifically but I know that it really depends on the dog. Some go a year some go 4 months, sometimes even less.
