you can get something called a Daytripper which is a full day pass you can use on all forms of transport (train, bus, ferry) within sydney. you will need a new pass each day but it's certainly easier than paying a seperate fare for each time you get on. you can also get weekly travel passes but they have boundaries on how far you can go and which mode of transport you can catch, depending on where you want to go. check the sydney transport info website for full details.

If you are staying in the city, walk. There are many magnificent walks in Sydney by day and night. Do Circular Quay and the Opera House by day and night. At night it is magical. From the Opera House walk through the Botanic gardens to Mrs Macquarie's Chair for a spectacular view of the Bridge. Get a Sydney Explorer ticket and take the red buses from place to place. One ticket allows you to get off and on as often as you like.

Get a Day Tripper ticket to go anywhere in Sydney by bus or train and some ferries.

There is lots to see in Sydney and it is all available by public transport or on foot.

Wear comfortable shoes and enjoy yourself.

During our visit to Sydney, we got the 3 day Sydney pass and used it on the Bondi/Sydney Explore Bus. It circles the whole city and hits all the good stuff.
I recommend taking the whole loop first and then jump off for sight seeing on the second loop.

By bus and foot through the CBD. The ferry is great to take to Manly beach and for photos of the city from the harbour. Bus to Coogie and you can walk to Bronte beach from there as well. I found walking to be the best way to see interesting things.
