how do i get AIM?

i went to google and typed in free aim and it came up so i downloaded it then it said downloading aol so i canceled how do i get aim but not aol

you should be able to just go to aim.com and download it. As I remember it will download a "free trial" of aol on your desktop and in your start menu but you can easily delete these after AIM has downloaded by going into start->control pannel->add/delete programs and click on the aol.

AIM is Aol's IM service. Just about any IM client these days will support AIM. I use Adium on the Mac.
