If you stand on a beehive and kill a bee, they will do their best to kill you. They don't have to be "killer bees", either. A threat to the hive is responded to by all the bees from that hive.

A bee that has been aroused and is in defensive
mode will follow you, in the case of the so-called
"killer bees" (which are just an African race of
the common honeybee) they may follow you for
a considerable distance.

On the other hand, if you know how to deal with
them and don't get them aroused you can even
open up the hive and do such things as picking
up the queen without being stung. I used to keep
bees and have picked up the queen and clipped
her wings so she couldn't leave with a swarm, to
keep from losing a swarm of workers (they won't
leave without the queen).

If a bee is accidentally crushed when working with
the hive the alarm pheromone is released, and
you will then have a bunch of aroused workers to
deal with. You can tell from the pitch of its buzz
when a worker bee is really aroused, and when it
gets into that state you might as well kill it, because
it seems to stay aroused almost permanently. I
have had such a bee come after me again as soon
as I got close to the hive, even an hour after it
was first annoyed.

If you step on a hive, then they will probably chase you for a while. Just run.
