I have heard that spring is the breeding season. I'm *pretty* sure I have a male and a female goldfish, so will they have babies? And if they do, what should I do to prepare?

I hate to tell you but gold fish will breed anytime the water is right. Spring, summer winter or fall. If your gold fish are not over the age of 2 they will not breed. When they do if they do, you have to do nothing to prepare. They will care for the young and the young will be fine. LEAVE THEM ALONE! Feed your tank and get ready to get a bigger one since gold fish can have anywhere from 5 to 300 eggs at one time. Good luck. Remember goldfish need 1 sq foot of surface water to 1 inch of fish. Luck

Well, good luck. Its nearly impossible to tell the sex of a goldfish but if they do start making babies one will start acting really rough with the other. Just keep an eye on them and contact a fish shop that knows alot about pond fish.

Are they big enough to spawn (3+ inches)? The males will get breeding tubercles on his gills when he is ready to spawn. If you don't see tubercles, they probably won't breed yet. You have to remove eggs right away from the tank so the parents don't devour them.

When I had goldfish, i asked at the pet store and they said that goldfish typically won't mate in such an enclosed environment as a small goldfish tank. I thought one of my fish were pregnant and it ended up that they were sick.

Darling, i had the same experience. Except i didnt know that my boy fish and my girl fish mated and the boy fish suddenly died. My girl fish was pregnant b4 the boy fish died and a few days l8er, we witnessed a birth of a fish. We let it be with its mother and soon found out it was a boy. We named the fish "Firsty" because it was the first baby fish to ever be born in our house. Firsty and his mom, "Sunny" were never seperated and we fed them and stuff. Don't seperate the child with the parents. Soon, Sunny died. We were really sad, and Firsty began to accept living without his mom. Now he's in his little fishbowl, still alive...and this happened 1 year ago.
