London... does anyone have that moment when they just think...I love London?

Question

I've lived in London my whole life yet when I look at London from the South Bank, it blows me away. This is the case even though I travel that way everyday! Do you ever feel that way? If so, where?

I don't live there, but having been so many times, best city in the world. I think seeing it from the London Eye really makes you appreciate London's architecture and history - something that a lot of the large American cities just don't have.

I'd love to live in London one way (when the house prices are reasonable)

I absolutely LOVED London. I've lived in the US all my 28 years and made my first visit to London last November with my sister. I'd always wanted to live abroad for various personal and professional reasons, and now can't fathom anywhere but there. Having lived in almost all parts of my own fabulous country - northeast, south, midwest and now Cali - I was never able to find a place to put down roots; couldn't imagine a place in the US where I would readily chuck it all and go - distressing! I'm now applying for the HSMP and hope to be there by June. Don't know what made such an impression - think they had me from the time I entered the tube station hauling around a 65lb suitcase with a broken handle and had people coming out of the woodwork to pull it for me, carry it up stairwells, etc. Never happen in a million, billion, trillion, infinity years here =) It's expensive, but what's more important - money or happiness, right?

And the beauty of the city is another story...

I live in the US but when ever I can scrape the money together I go to London and stay as long as I can. I have traveled a great deal and London is my favorite city in the world. There is really no where else I would rather be.
Plus, the way I love to travel London is ideal because you can be so many places so quickly if you wish.
There is so much to see and do in London, the museums alone could keep me happy forever.
My son and I just realized that this time last year we were in London.....I have been away too long.
You are SO lucky! I envy you!

I live South Bank and i love crossing the river especially at night, love the building lights everywhere. Just for having the privilege to cross those bridges i would not want to live anywhere else in London than the south. My fav bridges are Waterloo and Southwark but then the others are 'good bridges' too ;)

I dont live there but my family does and I have only just started to visit it but travelling into the city amazes me one minute your in a housing estate the next your crossing the Thames with the london eye and big ben facing you London isnt a place I could live but its an amazing place to visit

I think people who say London is the greatest city in the world have never seen other cities. I've been to London a few times and thought it was just a very large and mostly unfriendly city - does anyone smile or laugh when they are on the tube???
Paris, Dublin and Geneva are cities that I have been to and I think they are better quality cities than London!

No,even when I see several tourist sightings lke the big ben, houses of parliment and the london eye. I still hate london when I see all the congestion on the roads and its of pollution that is damaging the worlds amosphere, which is leading up to the the in the gasses when it reaches te earths surface warming the world up. As all the gasses have built up in the earths linosphere and they can't escape into space and so they warm the world up.

I know exactely what you mean. I moved from London to the States last year. It is really hard trying to make a new life here in America with my wife because I constantly think of home. Sure London has its problems, crime, pollution, cost of living, expensive real estate, aging infrastructure etc, etc. But it is still the best city on earth to live in and I have travelled across Europe (Paris, Amsterdam, Frankfurt), the States (Chicago, Boston, Atlanta, San Francisco, St Louis) and Africa (Harare). Now where else have I found a city with such cosmopolitan neighbourhoods with so many cultures, languages and lifestyles and the city thrives on its history. London is just saturated with history that it is hard not to be blown away by it. Samuel Johnson said it perfectly, "When a man is tired of London he is tired of life". For me I annoy my wife by constantly singing;
"Maybe its because I am a Londoner,
That I love London so.
Maybe its because I am a Londoner,
That I think of her wherever I go..."

I don't feel that way with London, even though I like London and think it's a cool city.
I feel that special way about my hometown.
It's probably where you grew up and developed sooooo many memories...so, whenever I come back to my hometown (usually once a year) and we are circling above the city...i get that feeling that you described above.

I fell in love with london a few years ago but only realised it when I moved abroad, came back pretty quick and now won't even consider going home unless need to.
