Hi

If the sound is constant, ie, apparent even when NOT changing gear with car moving then you have probably got worn differential bearings.

You will need to have the box replaced either way, and unless you can find a good second hand one it may not be worth doing.

Cheers

It sounds like it's the synchromesh is worn. You need a new gearbox. In the meantime if you double de clutch (which means, before you change gear, put your foot on the clutch and let it up quickly, then you should be able to change gears in the normal way.) You'd need to do this each time you change gear!

My husband dictated this to me...he knows about these things. lol.

It could be the clutch not disengaging properly. The cable may have stretched a bit, or the self-adjusting ratchet on the pedal has shed a few teeth. (they do!)

Gear linkage is also a possible problem.

Its the gear box itself probably the main shaft bearings.Try findapart.co.uk they will have a second hand one to fit a recon at the age of your car would not be worth it Regards Mick

Bearings are going out.
If it started gradually and became more pronounced over time you may get a few more miles out of it.
If the sound appeared more suddenly, you want to get a service very soon. Fluid contamination probably brought on this problem.
Good luck.
