The HP Director I have is for my printer. I have a 1210 all in one printer scannerand copier. The director is for setting up printing preferences, scanning pref. and for the toolbox for troubleshooting and maint. If you have recently installed hp hardware, software,it's for that. If it's a printer, it should have a image editor icon, and a memory disk icon besides the hp director.

Do you have an HP printer or scanner? The HP director is the program you use to scan documents/pics and edit them.

Do you have the latest version of Internet Explorer?

If you answered yes to both questions, it's a bug with the latest version of IE - thanks for the auto-install Microsoft.
Double click HP director. Do not click anywhere after that.
Press Alt & Space (Alt and Spacebar at same time).
Window control will appear - select Minimize.
You may have to select Minimize again.
The HP director will now appear minimized in your taskbar.

The HP director software is awful.

On my computer it used to launch the director with lots of printing tools. Now it does nothing and I have to go through separate printer options to get things done.

If you know where the Director came from you can try re-installing it.
