And will they be compulsory forms of ID?

It looks like if the Government gets its way Smart Cards will be introduced to replace Medicare cards from next year and will be used to access health care services.
There are some concerns the card will evolve to become a form of compulsory identification but the government is denying this, saying there will be penalties for anyone who demands it as ID.

All going well they will bephased in from 2008 and compulsory to access health services from 2010
I found a press releaseonline from last year that has a lot of information about how the card would work - apparently you could choose what information is stored on there and it will save people from needing multiple documents

Personaly I think it is a good idea, in regards to hindering Centrelink fraud etc, but I wouldn't trust anything this particular government says about the cards security just look at their track record on Honesty in the past!
If you have nothing to hide from any one it should not pose a threat to you, we have to do something to stop all the illegal stuff that's going on.

They will be introduced in mid 2008 is the latest at this stage...

I am sick and tired of seeing people defrad us the hard working tax payers of australia...
