I apologize if this is a dumb question, but I'm trying to start my own t-shirt clothing line. I want it to start small at first and then eventually i'd like to intergrate designs for pants, hats, etc. Does anyone know what i need to do to sell shirts with my own logo on the back of tag? I have cool designs for what goes on the shirt including the logo, but do i need to make (sew) the shirt myself? Also, is it possible to buy shirts from say jerseey or hanes, then pay to have designs printed on them, and finally sell these for my profit? or do I need some kind of license to sell hanes products with my designs? Thanks to anyone who can clear this up to me.

let me try to explain this a little better. I understand i can go to companies and get my design printed on a shirt, and possibly buy them in bulk. However, I want to be able to sell these shirts, and possibly start an e-commerce site for them. Is this legal, do i need a license even though it is my design and a different companies shirt? and, how would i go about getting my logo on the back of the tag? Or in this case, would I have to create the entire shirt from scratch first? Any help would be great. Thanks everyone

Ok, i'm getting really good feedback. now here's the thing. If i were to go through say, hanes or jersey, bought their t-shirts at wholesale, do i need some type of license that allows me to put my design on them and sell them, like a merchandise license or something? And finally, the only question i have yet to understand (i think) is how do i go about printing my logos on the tag of the shirt? Or can i even do that when purchasing from wholesale distributors? Would this be the case that i would have to design and create the entire shirt, fabric sewing and all? oh yeah one more, any suggestions on the best e-commerce site (price/user-friendly?) Thank you all so much. I didn't go to design/fashion school, i'm just ambitious and have a lot of ideas so i figured i'd run with them. Thanks again

Have some experience in fashion (retail counter doesn't count) Knowing how to run a business or having a partner who has taken a course would probably determine whether you could even start a line Making a vlog, blog, twitter or facebook would really help you out One guy I heard about on the radio was asking some of his followers for help with a job and he got hired at the company he wanted at a better position then he earlier applied for. And starting a group on facebook showing pictures of your designs would allow people to be more aware.

You do not need a license or licensing agreement with Jersey, Hanes, Russell or Soffe. You can purchase these shirts from a wholesaler and then print your unique content on them. If you want to protect your content you may want to trademark it. To do so go to the US Patent and Trademark Office website.

By doing this others will have to license your content to be able to duplicate it.

Good Luck.

You can get them printed by a company. There are a few out there that will let you specify the design. You'd need a retail license to get wholesale prices, by in bulk, and such.

Good luck.
