the computer says local area connection is now connected but i still can not access anything on the internet. How do I fix this?

What I would suggest that you do is unplug your modem and router for about fifteen seconds or reset them, whatever you want to try to do. After you have done that, you should try to see if you can get online. If you still can't access the internet, I would suggest that you try to repair you connection. One way to do this is to right click on the little computer icon witht he two lines coming out of it and selecting repair or going into Network and Internet Connections and trying to do it that way. You may also want to check if you're on the right network if you're wireless.

If you are connecting through a router or a modem, the 'now connected' refers to the fact that your PC can talk to the modem or router. It tells you nothing about connections beyond that. Check the status lights on the modem / router to verify that it is connected.
