The most popular question.

He limps because part of his leg was necrotic tissue and was surgically removed without his permission.

He is in so much pain because he had an anheurism in his leg and he chose to have it removed instead of having his leg amputated. he was attatched to his leg. his words exactly. The potassium and other chemicals held back by the anheurism travelled into his body and killed him, frying his nervouse system and giving him a coronary. They brought him back to life but he was in too much pain. Again they wanted to amputate the leg but he told them to put him in a coma, that way the pain would pass. They did but his girlfriend gave them permission to cut out the bad tissue.

It may have saved his life but it left him with a limp.

He kept his leg but his pain is chronic because ot the anheurism being pierced instead of the leg being removed.

The reason for the anheorisn is unknown but the reason it killed his leg muscle and almost killed him is because the doctors in the hospital that day took him for a junkie looking for a fix and kept him in observation for three days while the muscle died. Cuddy was in charge at the time so she will probably never fire him for that reason. BTW, House was the one who figured out what the problem was with his leg and he was a junkie, but; junkies can get ill also.

You can see this explained in the episoe "Three Stories" in Season One. It is the second to the last episode of the season.

It's only explained in one episode, and it's a large part of the buildup. Don't read on if you haven't seen it and plan to....

SPOILER WARNING!!!!

Long story short: Long ago, House had a blood clot in his thigh that cut off bloodflow to the surrounding muscle tissue. By the time everyone else figured out what the problem was, the tissue had died. The pain was so great, they put him into a chemically induced coma. His wife at the time consented to a proceedure to operate, which House had forbidden, and the damaged muscle tissue was cut out. The damage was extensive, causing House to lose a lot of motor contol...thus the need of the cane. The massive amounts of scar tissue House's leg muscle constantly hurt him due to every day use.....not to mention he now has a chemical dependency on his pain killers.

Fun show.

EDIT: Never mind the spoiler warning.....someone else already spilled the beans.

He had a nerve damage disease in his leg and his wife (Sela Ward) at the time, now divorced had to make a decision amputate or cut out part of the problem. He made her save his leg but due to the nature of the illness he now has constant and chronic pain. I've been watching since it started and it was the 2nd season before they let you know

He was limping in the pilot episode. Since then, the show has shined some light into his past. (I don't get a chance to see it every week, so I don't know if they have given the answer).

A nasty blood clot in his leg... he pops Vicodan like candy, for the pain. Hugh Laurie plays Dr.Greg House and he is a Bristish actor. I love the show, he's arrogant, persuasive and always right!

Dr. House suffers from chronic pain due to an accident and this is why he limps.

He had an infarction (like a heart attack but in the leg) in one of his leg muscles and it ended up dying and he had some of it removed. He cannot walk properly now because of that and he is in pain.
