You must work the room. You just never know. That guy standing on the opposite side of the room may just happen to be the owner of a very profitable company and just may be looking to hire someone who has the exact same skills as you.

But you'll never meet him if you stand in the corner.

sit in the corner until I'm slightly drunk, chat to a friendly looking person until I'm extremely drunk, then embarrass myself by confessing undying love to every person in the room, as they are now all my best friends, then return to the corner to pass out

Neither, I speak to people who interest me and then if I happen to meet other people through them then that's fine. I don't see the point in flitting from one person to the next.
