Yes, California in general is VERY expensive to live in. Depending on where you are from, be prepared to spend a lot more, or lower your standard of living.

That depends on what you consider expensive, and your tastes. There are some very expensive areas, but others are not that bad. I do property management here and put people into houses often. You will be able to get good house for a little over a thousand dollars, and could go cheaper if needed. contact me if you want some help finding a place.

Typical one bedroom rent is over 800.00. Two bedroom: 900~1200 and so on. Those are for apartments. Homes rent for 1800 and up typically.

Less expensive areas include East (El Cajon, Santee, La Mesa, Lemon Grove etc) and South County (Chula Vista, National City).

In general, it is hard to find areas in central San Diego area that feel safe/comfortable for most people. North County is much more expensive in general but usually much safer feeling (except Oceanside-lots of gangs).

Safe areas in East County include Allied Gardens, La Mesa (North Side of Freeway 8), El Cajon (North Side of Freeway 8), Santee, Lakeside.

Safe areas in South County: Mainly East Lake and East Side of 805 Freeway in Chula Vista.

Hope that helps.

Anywhere within 5 miles of the beach and you're gonna pay an arm and a leg. Houses are way cheaper in El Cajon, La Mesa, and some of the other outlying areas.

Yes, any place along the Pacific coast in California is exspensive. Try going inland a bit off the coast.
