My friend got this computer for free. When he went to play and burn CD's on his CD writer, it opened it, but it came up with a blank screen, like there is nothing in there. He can eject the drive from the desktop. He has another CD drive that works perfectly fine. What is the problem? It says that the device is working properly. Could it be the driver?

Does it just not write CDs or does it also not play CDs?
Try this, go to the My Computer folder, right click on the CD drive that isn't working and select properties. There should be a tab for Recording, click on that and make sure Enable CD recording on this drive is checked.

Try cleaning the drive, check to make sure the cd burned correctly.

get a can of air and blow the dust out, that may be blocking the lens that reads the disks
