I think Yahoo answers has shown a good cross section of the country.
I've been suprised to find out how many clueless people there are out there. So many who have allowed the media to shape their opinions on just about everything.

In general, I think what you see on here is that the more reasonable ones keep their mouths shut and the 'mud slinging propagandist' and 'immature site users' are the ones that open up and YELL... which is precisely why I tend to stay away. I can always vote later on, after all. It's unfortunate that adults (hopefully that's what we are) can't have a discussion on a site like this without resorting to cursing, yelling and below-the-belt hits. Then again, that seems to be more and more what politics is in general. I have a friend who says, "You can't play near a mud puddle without getting dirty." Too bad reason and level-headedness does not seem to prevail... (and for a category of equal viciousness, go check out the spirituality and religion section).

What's counterproductive about open, honest dialogue between groups of people and individuals who feel free to express their true opinions in an anonymous environment? It's easy to disregard those comments that you don't fancy. If the comment hits a nerve with you, then step up and tell your side of the story. If not, move on.
As far as what the comments indicate about society, I think all it does is highlight the various levels at which our citizens participate in dialogue and political issues. There will always be varying degrees; it's human nature. This forum also attracts many young people under the age of 18 who may not be educated about lots of issues, or who just want to use it to be silly and pass the time.

There is a quote, "There is nothing new under the sun." While you might be surprised, the fact is that people are generally narrow minded and immature when something contradicts a belief or value. In some cases that narrow-mindedness is good. In others it is terrible. Narrow-mindedness keeps a POW focused on values. Narrow-mindedness does not allow for an open exchange of information or dialog.
It is important to know when to be so and when to be open to dialog.

hey strike_ea......Don't confuse the libs with facts. They want folks to forget about those inconvenient truths.
Now to answer the question......Folks that can't tolerate anyone that have apposing views are closed minded individuals that lend nothing to a dialog or debate. However, believing in a particular course after considering all ramifications is honored and respected tradition in our country. Knee jerk reactions such as daily or weekly polls do nothing to enhance the process because then the lemmings get involved and off we go to la-la land. Many politicians rule by poll and do not have the courage of their convictions. One well know pol does not and he is vilified for it merely because of his party affiliation. Name calling is within the purview of individuals that do not have the capacity for honest, thoughtful, persuasive, analytical thought. Thats where the nitwits come in. Coming up with an answer or position to a problem is much more difficult for those that have a thought process that is only a distant memory. Alas, they shall always be with us. Endure.

Yes, it most certainly has. I'm getting ready for use another membership on my host network because this one is really beginning to get on my last nerve. Most especially in the areas of religion and spirituality. The mudslinging at Christian beliefs is uncalled for and if people cannot answer any questions using intelligence instead of using a religious area to sell a non-belief and sending atheists web site hyperlinks, it becomes really very sad and not enjoyable at all.

Yes, narrow minded zealots, immature cr@p-stirrers and politically motivated propagandists thrive upon Y!A.. It's sad, makes the politics section and the religion section all uncredable, biased and often difficult reading (as you have to ignore all the rubbish responces & questions).

Thats what makes the world go round.

And look how giddy people are to elect the Clintons the Bushs etc to office instead of demanding stateman NOT politicians.
there is a difference

I think there is a lot of legitimate discussion going on here. Many times I personally disagree with people's questions or answers. If people seem to be intelligent and sincere, I always try to answer in a sincere manner. It is a great forum for open debate but, as with all open forums, it is open to some whom we do not really wish to communicate. Ignore them and try to learn and grow from others who provide meaningful insight.
