A 2002 vehicle average mileage should be around 60,000 miles.
If the belt (or Belts) have not been changed, you are way over due. V-belts should be replaced every 3 years or 30,000 miles and Serpentine belts are designed to last between 30,000 and 60,000 miles BUT, they will stretch-crack- and split.
You may have a DRIVEN component with a bad bearing. Power Steering Pump- Water Pump- Air Conditioner Compressor- Alternator. Best to have an ASE certified technician look it over and give you an estimate.

all, that it is a glazed belt. you will get rid of the noise by replacing the belt. notice when you spray it with water or WD40 the noise will go away temporalily. sometimes tightening the belt fixes it too, but most likely its getting it wore out..how old is that particular belt. if its a few yrs. old its time for a new one anyway.

there is no way for anyone to determine what's wrong w/your car from the breif description that you've posted. Give some more details, perhaps you'll get lucky and someone that has experienced the same thing will respond - or consider speaking w/an actual mechanic.
Also, if your check engine light is on, in some cities there are auto mechanics stores such as an R&S Strauss or Auto Zone that will look at your vehicle for free and give you a free evaluation to indicate what is exactly wrong - however keep in mind that the check engine light must be on in order to receive this service for free.

Its sounds like a rubber belt, get the belts looked at, they are loose or need replacement.

Take to garage.
Its a classic sound that you describe.
The other answers on here are right.A slipping belt that is on the engine.Looks like a 2 foot big rubber band.

It could be the fan belt which is slipping. Its easy enough to tighten. Just smile at your local mechanic whose heart will melt and hopefully he will do it for no charge. :-)
