I think it's fantastic that he finally realized that he doesn't have to conform to society's ideas of what is "right". Hopefully he will give more men and women (pro athletes or not) the courage to come out and not be ashamed.

The responses to this question absolutely run the gamut. Amazing that an ex-NBA basketball player "coming out" would be newsworthy. I know that his decision to "c.o." must have been one that he thought through completely; for in the GLBT-phobic world we live in, it's something not to be taken lightly. I think he has every right to "come out". Assuredly, he's well aware of the pros and cons, whether one out weighs one to another. I don't know John Amaechi, but I believe that someone as talented, intellectually gifted, and politically minded as John has far more to present to this world than his sportsmanship. There's no doubt in anyone's eye that "coming out" will continue in pro athletics. Perhaps one day, probably far in the future, it really won't matter. When it comes to John Amaechi, what he does with his "c.o." and the manner in which he conducts himself as a public figure and role model will be the thing to watch. Let's toast John: here's to believing in his ability to live gracefully and graciously in a hostile world. Congratulations on your decision to "come out".

Sadly, there will be more coming out. Maybe not now, but much later. This is a real sad epidemic for sports. It's kinda funny, but when i saw him play at Penn State, it looked like he could've been gay, but then again, sometimes you can't be too sure these days.

I could never for the life of me (and i probably never will) discover how and why stuff like this happens! What makes a man (or a woman) thinks that the best thing they can do with their lives is to have a partner who is the same sex as them! There is nothing like having a partner of the OPPOSITE SEX to enjoy life with!

This is going to set a bad example for the kids. It doesn't need to be this way. If you come out of the closet, you need to do a U-turn and go right back in it! Then, ask someone to take a hammer and some nails and nail it shut so this never happens again for all of eternity!

I remember there were some WNBA teams in the league who had a lot of gay players on their team and that's one of the reasons why some of those teams never made it to where they are now. Let's stop the madness before more people get hurt!

Well one good thing about this is that if he was on the down low women are aware of his lifestyle now.

Down Low
When Black males try to remain straight by having sex with other men then go home and sleep with their wives. To keep a homosexual lifestyle hidden from others.

I don't know if this guy was sleeping with any women before his announcement but I guess it's good for them that he told the truth. There was a show on Oprah featured about this.
Single women have enough to worry about when looking for a suitable mate. Married women don't deserve this either.

Here is a clip about being on the down low.

No. Four teams in 5 seasons, I guess he figured he needed to do something to get some attention.
