Yes, I believe that A Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich is a good metaphor for life. I have not read it for many years, but I think of it often.
One of the scenes in the book which I see reflected in life occasionally is the scene where a detail of prisoners and their guards are returning over the ice from a day's work, and they see another detail of workers and guards approaching the prison gates from another direction. The prison administration makes the re-entry into the prison as arduous and time-consuming as possible just to hassle the prisoners.
The group of prisoners and guards who spot the other group first take off running as fast as possible in order to reach the prison gates before the other group. Ivan Denisovich reflects on the irony of the cooperation between the prisoners and guards within the respective groups.
You see this once in a while in politics - two groups who are natural enemies - "strange bedfellows" who cooperate in the context of one issue where they happen to be in favor of the same end.
I realize that you probably haven't read the book, and are trying to get people to do your homework for you. But if I were you, I'd read the book. I think you'd like it.
