The DVD movie ,JOYEAUX NOEL,tells the true story of the christmas truce between enlisted men on the Ypres salient.

Only....the story has been hijacked by the french..who werent there!

Of course the French and Belgians manned their own positions along stretches of the hundreds of miles of trenchline.
But they werent in the Ypres salient where the famous event took place and they were not involved.

Was the director trying to give the movie an artistic aura, aiming at the psuedo intellectual audience?

I suppose we had muslim officers leading us over the top too!

Mr fox,
never have i heard as much of a crock.

The film was not meant to be any of those things.youre trying too hard to look clever.

i can assure you, there were no muslim offcicers on any side.
Did you go to school at all?

The difference between being ,and trying to look clever is someone who uses words and phrases that make sense and those who use ones they think will impress but arent suitable and are grammatically incorrect.

My assurances about muslim officers are readily available on the internet.

My advice to you is to calm down and be yourself. If you dont know anything about the subject, then just say so and make an effort to contribute that is within your sphere of knowledge.Otherwise you will be easily exposed.

My Great Granddad was in the trenches on that day in 1914. It began with signs that said Merry Christmas and You don't shoot, we don't shoot opposite the British trenches that were in some places only 80 yards apart. Mostly the Germans on the other side were Saxons or Bavarians and not Prussians. Soon all along the lines British and Belgian troops joined Germans in no man's land and the truce was on. Later in the day it spread to French lines to the Swiss border. The truce held on Boxing day (26 december). But there were exceptions and on some fronts fighting was never interrupted.

The movie is a representation of that much mythologised event. It is a representation and as such it is its own thing. To claim that it should be accurate in historical minutiae is to miss the point. The film resonates because it highlights the folly of war and belief in illusive national identity - that most constructed and imagined thing. The real unifying element between the sides was that they were soldiers dying and suffering at the bottom of a hegemony where the privileged and rich kept their hands clean and limbs intact while France ran red with proletarian blood. Any film, painting or poem relating to war is a representation and as such none claim lay to an 'absolute' truth. The point is in the interpretation of the audience.

I was always under the impression that the participants were Scottish, French and German soldiers who took a short while of from dying for multi-coloured rags of cloths invented a years before to share in the common humanity of a game of football.

I'm also sure there were Muslim officers serving in World War 1 on all sides.

Yes I went to school. Jeez, you're touchy aint you? Whats the difference in looking clever and being clever y'think?

When you say 'we' had muslim officers leading 'us' over the top - do you really expect me to believe that you were on the front line there? Coz if you were I'd have a lot more time for your assurances.

And by the way, which side would you have played for? Your usual avatar is a swastika isn't it? Just think you might've got to nutmeg old Adolf himself..

God I hope don't get easily exposed on here.. so being clever is.. making bald statements and hoping no-one calls you on them, right? Or is it something to do with posing a question about movies and using it to make a statement rather than seek the opinion of others?

Just because you read the film one way doesn't make me a dummy for reading it another. And don't believe everything you read on the internet! There's some apocryphal stuff floating about out there... big word 'apocryphal' d'ya think I used it correctly?

Anyway I answered the question ages ago so good luck with finding a Best Answer something tells me it ain't gonna be me...

*That should read 'if you're dumb don't try and act clever' not 'your dumb'.

Ahh sorry mate only messin with ye! I wouldn't wanna come across as some sorta grammer nazi..

Yes, the film does have handy subtitles for all the languages, a pretty good marketing stunt i say. Sell the film in three countries and they all think they have a significant part as a country in it. Quite clever actually.

it's like the Americans taking credit for things the British did during the Second World War, I mean, we all know the British did the Dunkirk evacuation AND fough El-Alamien, but the Americans may hijack them by saying they were there!

Wait...what was the question, I had to wade thru a bunch of words to get to it...
oh there it is....
No. The director was not trying to give the movie an artistic aura, aiming at the pseudo (you spelled that wrong, btw) intellectual audience.

Thanks and have a nice day.
