Hi there, second question today from over here in the UK.
My 70 Dart (318) starts fine and runs fine, apart from gearbox issue, (see other question). Once warm though the oil light faintly comes on when at idle or crawling along. Once I put my foot down it goes out again. The light only comes on when the car is in drive, if in park and at idle no light comes on.
There is plenty of oil in it, just wondered if it is the oil pump worn out or blocked? Hope you can help

J

The red light means to pull over and shut off the engine before you do major damage. The circuit that monitors oil pressure indicates zero oil pressure. The light is controlled by an oil pressure switch, and when there is zero oil pressure the light will come on. The light will not specifically tell you why there isn't oil pressure. There may be plenty of oil in the engine. Some cars have an oil level sensor that does indicate low oil level. Some cars have an oil pressure sending unit, used with a pressure guage on the dash. But you question indicated a warning "light". Therefore indicating a problem with pressure, reasons unknown. So the best course of action would be to immediately shut the engine off. This was the intention of the manufacturer when they designed this feature into their vehicle.

I had a similar problem many years ago in a 1964 Ford...

Most likely, the pressure relief valve in the oil pump is failing. This valve is there to prevent excessive oil pressure from blowing out the crankshaft seals.

Most likely, the spring that holds the valve shut is fatigued, or broken. Best practice would be to replace the oil pump.

Have someone hook up a oil pressure guage and check it. should be around 30-40 pounds of pressue at fast idle. Otherwise I would suspect that the oil sending unit is going bad. They are pretty cheap and just screw into the side of the engine.

Screw a mechanical oil pressure gauge into the engine and check the actual pressure.
The bad thing is that most of the old idiot light sensors come on around 2 P.S.I.
If the gauge confirms low pressure, you might as well slip some new rod and main bearings in while the trany. is out.
