Unfortunately for you and me we will never find an answer for this question. You see, as soon as a war starts it automatically becomes history. Every event thereafter becomes part of history. History has not and never will be 100% true or false. History is based on opinion and research. You cannot run history through a lab test and calculate your results. Many factors go into a war especially when it comes to finding out who really started one. You can read any history book out there to find out who started WWII and I guarantee you those books will have different "opinions". Have yo ever noticed that history books taught to kids in school do not contain not one negative sentence about the U.S.? But its all idiosyncratic because if you go to Japan (which I did) there books do not contain not one sentene of negativity about there country!
So I hope that answers your question. In the mean time read as much as you can get all the information you can from credible sources of course. Then draw your opinion based on the information you have gathered.
Don't be a sheep in this world. Don't believe everthing you hear and read. Question everything, believe nothing. There is more fallacy in this world than you think. Live your life like a lion and not a sheep going along with what everyone else says!

Technically the pundits will tell you that we never have started a war, we have been forced into war by other countries, or a "police action" has escalated into a war. Vietnam and Korea were police actions really never declared wars (bunch of BS). Of course Iraq is a war started by the terrorists on 9/11 not us. Kuwait was to protect our allies and they were invaded anyway., you get the point, the USA is always considered the police of the world, the protector of the innocent and the guy with the white hat, tell that to the kids who are dying over in Iraq.

No. The US declared independence from Britain, built a Navy to fight the Barbary Pirates who were capturing sailors and demanding tribute, declared war on Britain in 1812 due to some provocations. The US started the Spanish-American war when the battleship Maine blew up, probably an accident. The US invaded Iraq in 2003, claiming a disputed link to 9/11 and danger from WMD, before UN inspectors could finish their job and declare Iraq had no WMD. In these cases, the US chose to fight, when they could have not fought.

Depends on how you look at the Bush policy of preemption. Do you believe Saddam was a threat or would be a threat? If he was or would be then did the US start the war? No. He would have by his actions.
Do the police start the gun fight just because they fire first or is the the criminal with their actions that lead to it and therefore start it?
Excluding that, then other than possibly the Revolution and technically the Civil War, I would say the answer is yes. The US does not start wars.

Most of the time we join in when a war is already in progress. No explaining Grenada that way though. Vietnam was already a French War, North Korea had already attacked the south, and we were part of a UN mission. Bay of Pigs was real dicey. Technically it wasn't us that did the attacking (cough, cough).
I would say our record is pretty good on that count, but not hardly unclouded.

Not really true, we start them with an excuse. Spanish American war was questionable, Vietnam...Some will argue Iraq but I think we had reasonable cause to go there.
