I was never told that life was supposed to be unpainful. If that was the case, then we would all be pain free.
Pain is an experience that teaches us what we need to do in the future.

I am a Buddhist, so I will answer this from a Buddhist perspective.
The cycle of life is defined as: birth, old age, sickness, and death -reincarnation. We believe there is a place, or perhaps we could say, a part of our lives that retains the memory of all of our actions. Believing life is guided by cause and effect, as we make causes in any of our lives we "enscribe" those causes on our lives. Then at some later time, whether it is immediately, as in burning ourselves (touching a hot stove -cause; being burned-effect) or in far into future lives (killing someone and not being caught in the same lifetime) we will receive the effects of those causes.
As we educate ourselves about what is or is not a good or bad cause, we can begin to choose the best causes for ourselves. We do not always choose the best cause, so we recieve painful effects. As life is continuous with reincarnation, we are recieveing those effects, and making new causes, all along. Because we all interact, we have similar karma (the results of either good or bad causes) and hurt others, hurt ourselves, and are hurt by others. Life is nothing if not complex.
Adding a bit from psychology, I would say as we experience some kind of pain we should learn from it, take is as a challenge, not back off from experience, and be ready for the next time. This is personal growth.

I don't think I have ever heard anyone say life is supposed to be unpainful.... Pain is a huge part of it and even though we all wish we didn't have any, it's what makes us stronger in the long run. If there was no pain, what would doctors and healers do?? What would like world be like? It wouldn't be life as we know it....

Who the hell ever said life was supposed to be unpainful??? All major religions mention various things about triumphing over adversity and becoming stronger through difficult times...
I think life is supposed to be hard... it's just like everything else - If it's not difficult, you're not trying hard enough.

I don't remember anyone telling me that life was painless, quite the contrary. I was told that life will be full of pain and sorry and unfair. But it will also be filled with unimaginable joys. Who ever told you that life is unpainful probably also had a bridge to sell you. That is my point of view.

Well I tried to think of something to add to what the majority have already said: that pain is a part of life and contains the potential for growth, but that seems to cover a lot of ground.
We hurt others and ourselves because we are not perfect.

Hey, who said life was "unpainful?"
The Buddha said, "Life is suffering."
We suffer until we accept that pain is a normal part of life, and maturity is when we get over being special about it.

I don't think that life is supposed to be painless. (for that matter i doubt that life is supposed to be anything, it just is.) As for why we hurt, it is because we can be damaged and must learn to avoid that which damages us (both physically and mentally).
Why we hurt others however is one of the great questions and would take a book to give a satisfactory answer.

Life is certainly not painless, ie..."If it doesn't kill you it makes you stronger." hurting others could be tied in with hurting yourself. Haven't you ever heard someone say, it's my decision and if it's wrong I'll only hurt myself. Oh contrare ...that decision could affect the lives of all around you, and quite possibly hurt one or more. O course if one deliberately hurts another they have a big problem, and that opens up a whole new discussion.

As far as I know, life is NOT supposed to be free from pain. I'd suggest you check out the Four Noble Truths of Buddhism. The first one is that life involves suffering.
