Would it make any difference to you at all if you knew, and everybody else knew, that a player on your team were gay? Would you treat him/her any differently than if you hadn't known? Would you be comfortable showering or changing your clothes next to them? Honest question, so please, honest answers only.

I knew John Amaechi was gay while he played for the Utah Jazz. Someone I knew that was also gay used to hang out with him, so I learned from an inside source. That was probably 4 or 5 years ago. To be honest, I had thought about calling in the local Sports Talk radio station with a juicy bit of gossip, but I figured it was a very personal detail that very well could ruin a person's career. Why would I want to be responsible for that? Let him deal with that on his own time. Obviously, that time recently came.

No, I wouldn't care whether the person was openly gay or not. Whatever the person's preference is is their decision and because we would be teammates I would respect that. I wouldn't treat the person any different than I would a heterosexual teammate. Chances are the openly gay individual has no interest in any of the teammates and therefore I wouldn't have a problem changing or having to shower in front of them. I have an openly gay friend. She is the nicest, sweetest person and I don't feel uncomfortable around her at all. We have different romantic interests and I know that she doesn't have any feelings for me in a romantic way. A teammate is someone that you have to depend on, so why would you want to change how you feel about the person just because of their sexual preference? I hope this helps with your question.

Great question just to start out with.

Absolutely not. I am married, fully straight, and it would not bother me in the slightest. Now I am from San Francisco area, where being openly gay really is no big deal, but my beliefs would stand firm no matter where I was from.

I find it funny, in my own opinion of course, that some people find it really that strange/disgusting/unmoral/etc. That's a whole other issue though...

I cannot say that 100% of gay men would look at you changing or whatever, but 99% of them wouldn't. I know that some would feel uncomfortable, but to banish them from the team or the sport would be ridiculous just for their sexual preference.

I thought we left all that behind in the 60's with civil rights and earlier on with women voting....

I'd be fine with it. I have a gay roomate myself. Trust me when I tell you that when you're in the shower or something like that, they aren't going to try anything on you. Gay men don't go after guys when they are straight. Most of these people are so full of themselves that they think every gay guy is going to hit on them. Ridiculous if you ask me.

Yes. Not only would it make the atmosphere in the locker room very awkward, I believe homosexuality is unnatural, immoral and flat out wrong.
