make sure you have a good heater first. Get two so one won't have to work as hard and you have a back up this way.

Yeah, 70 isn't anything to worry about.

A something that happened to me.......
Once the power went out for a few days in the winter and the temp was below 0 outside. The water temp eventually got down to the 50's. I wrapped towels over the tank which helped keep the temp up. I was sure that when I raised the towels that all of my fish (12-in a a 55gal) would be dead, but to my surprise only one had died. They moved really slow, almost like when the tank lights are out. I guess their metabolism slowed. I was just so thankful that my fish were ok.

Have you got a heater or has this packed up, You need to get another one, For the time being you will need to turn your aquarium lights this will heat up the water a little, If the fall in temp was due to water change it may have stressed the fish but the temp will rise, well at least to room temp, Don't worry if it was a natural process the fish will have adjusted, It is when the temp falls rapidly or increases rapidly like adding too cold or hot water rapidly that can upset the fish a little fast Hope this helps

Go out and buy a new heater. Your current heater is obviously broken. This can happen for a number of reasons - either it was cheap, there was an electrical surge, it was left on when the water level was too low and it burnt out... etc.
Just go out and get a new one, and don't skimp; get a good heater, a submersible one. Then come home and put it in. Your fish will be okay for a few hours in cool water.

First, check your heaterstat is working by turning it up & feeling the tube to see if it is heating. If not, then you need to get a new one. In an emergency, wrap a quilt around the tank & over the top. Keep the light on. Float a plastic bag containing hot water, on the surface.

depending on the size of your tank-
add a heater or check the size of the one you have -- five
watts of power to a gal.
ie-- 50 watt for ten gal.
75 watt for 15 gal.
a gradual temp. change will not hurt fish, try to maintain at least 70 degrees-- maybe a heater of the right size will keep it more stable.

No worries, just go and get a new one. Don't get a cheap one. A heater is a very important part of your aquairium. They'll be fine for a few hours.

70 isn't a disaster yet. you don't want it to drop too much lower depending on what you have. just get a new heater if the one you have can't be trusted.

Check your water heater. If it is broke then you may need to get a new one. remember to put the heater in the water unplugged first, wait 5 minutes, then plug it in. warm glass and water tend to make glass crack if it is plugged in first then put in the water.

Just a thought... when you go to get the new heater, buy two and put one away i case it happens again and you'll avoid a mad dash to the pet store :)

Suction some of the water out and put in some cool water from the tap. Then stop the heater and go get a new one. Obviously your heater is malfunctioning. And, turn off your overhead light.
