My Gateway is 2 years old. It's working really slow from the time I turn it on. I've defragged it, run several virus scans, and my internet is ridiculously slow. I'm in the sticks of SC and can't get DSL without spending an arm and a leg. I have tried NetZero, Earthlink and Netscape and they are all very slow even with acceleration. Any suggestions on how to make it run faster. I still have 90% memory available. I'm so frustrated, any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

More details, I've always used a phone line since I got it. The slowdown started about 4 months ago or so, just out of the blue really. I did clear up some viruses when I ran the scans and I have run adware/spyware checks on it too. Cleared up the cookies and deleted temp internet files. Still no luck speeding it up.

If you follow the steps below you will get all you can out of your computer. I know you have already run several virus scans. One more won't hurt to be sure you are clean. Spyware can also be a reason for slowdown. Spybot and Adaware will take care of that.

A clean computer is key to a faster computer. Run the 3 scans below.

Update and run your Anti-Virus program. Don't have one? You can run a free online scan from CA.
http://www3.ca.com/securityadvisor/virusinfo/scan.aspx

Download, update and run Spybot---http://www.safer-networking.org/ . Don't forget to use the Immunize feature.

Download, update and run Adaware---http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/products/select_your_product.php

Now lets clean up your registry.

Download RegScrubXP--http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?d...

Safely cleans junk out of the Windows 2000/XP system registry. All changes made to the registry are fully restorable to it's original condition. You can make an exclusion list of registry entries that RegScrubXP will not display as problems. You can sift through a list of file extensions, company names, run upon startup programs, Internet Explorer history, and uninstall programs to delete what you think is junk.

Download CleanUp---http://www.stevengould.org/software/clea...

Free disk space, make your computer run better/faster and protect your privacy - all in one easy solution. All for free!

Now lets clean up your disk.

Do a Disk Cleanup and Disk Defrag. You can find both of them by following the path below.
Start>all programs>accessories>system tools>Disk Cleanup. Let it do its thing. You can check every box that has something to delete.
Now follow the same path and do a Disk Defrag. Again just let it do its thing.

Now lets tweak your connection.

There are many programs out there to do this. I will give you 2 of them.
The first one is TCP Optimizer.

Description: The TCP Optimizer is a free, easy Windows program that provides an intuitive interface for tuning and optimizing your Internet connection. There is no installation required, just download and run.

http://www.speedguide.net/downloads.php...

You can get support for the best way to set it up right from their forum http://forums.speedguide.net/

The second one is Cablenut.

Windows XP tested and approved

CableNut is a tool for optimizing your Internet Connection. We have provided a way to tweak any option you may want to in the adjuster. You can load "CableNut Custom Setting" files that are included with the program to tweak your Internet connection.

Again support is available right from their forum.http://www.broadbandnuts.com/index.php?p...

All programs are FREE!

After applying the suggestions above you will have a clean and faster computer. Enjoy.

Have you tried scanning for spyware or deleting the cache (cookies)? This isn't hard, there are some free anti-spy programs (I'm using Ad-Aware SE personal edition, free), and you can get plenty of advice on this. They can slow you down quite a bit. And the next thing after you look at those is to look at a firewall program. I should really do that myself, because I haven't done it yet.

If you are using a Phone-line to connect to the Internet, then your computer will be slow. It is ordinary... If you get Cable, such as DSL or Optimum, your Internet experience will be much better and faster.

Your Gateway computer doesn't seem to have a problem, but you could always elaborate more on your slownesses.

Best regard.

Do you have alot of program that run when you start up your computer? If so you could either get more R.A.M, to make more physical room for the pc OR you could manually put on the programs you need for that day, instead of all of them running from the time you turn your pc on. If you want to stop programs running at startup, Click Start > Run, type msconfig . > Startup tab, and untick the applications you don't want to run at start up.

If you are unable to identify some of the processes go onto this site, and look them up. http://www.liutilities.com/products/wintaskspro/processlibrary/

Press Ctrl+F to search. P.S only untick .exe files. AND DO NOT UNTICK UNKNOWN FILES, as this could lead to system failures..

Good Luck
