The very next time you plan to change engine oil add a quart of engine degrease or engine cleaner while the motor idles for 20 -30 minutes. Do not drive the vehicle when you do this. The cleaner can be purchased at NAPA, Car Quest and other good auto parts stores. After the idle time is up, drain the oil for at least 1/2 hr. Use a quality oil filter, Wix, AC Delco. NAPA (Wix) Motor-craft or Purolator's top shelf filter. When refilling the crankcase use Havoline, Valvoline, Pennzoil, Quaker State, Gulf, Brad Penn, Kendall or Mobil. Be sure to use the correct viscosity your hand book calls for. Leave enough room in your crankcase fill to add a quart of Rislone. It's a high detergent oil manufactured to clean varnish, sludge, clean piston rings, open oil returns behind the oil rings, cleans under sides of pistons, hydraulic lifters, all oil galleries, crap in your timing chain cover, scum build up on top of the cylinder heads, interior of push rods, rocker arms, valve springs etc. Take a look at Rislone's website. It's not a black magic snake oil. Be sure your thermostat is working properly. Heat helps to drive off moisture.

Depending on how many miles and how neglected the motor has been, you may want to just keep changing the oil every 500 to 1000 miles. {Normal oil change intervals is around every 3000 miles} Oil has detergents in it to help break down and remove sludge deposits in the engine.
There are also FAST FLUSH fluids that you add to the oil just before you have the oil changed. "CAREFUL" ! High mileage engines have tendencies to develop leaks and other problems when you start to wash them out. Severe conditions of sludge may require MAJOR engine repairs.

Parts stores have several products available. If your car is a Toyota or Lexus, then you should contact the dealer because of a class action lawsuit that covers it.
