We know that in the series, the Malfoys were very stinking filthy rich and always ridicule the Weasleys’ financial condition… but what if the situation were reversed?

What do you think this would affect Weasley-Malfoy relationship? Will this change the friendship between Harry and the Weasleys? Will this change the rivalry between Harry and the Malfoys? Is it a truly a big deal then?

If the Weasley's were rich and the Malfoy's were poor it would definitely have an impact on the series. Lucius wouldn't be able to use his wealth to influence people at the Ministry and he probably wouldn't be on the Board of Govenors either. His wealth affords him a position of power in the Wizarding community as a legitimate person. If he was poor, he would not enjoy such high social standing, nor would Draco. I imagine that there would still be a great deal of animosity between the Weasley's and the Malfoy's though, even without the Malfoy's lording their wealth over the Weasley's. The Malfoy's consider them utterly contemptible as "blood-traitors" and no amount of money would make up for that. I think they'd be as elitist as we know them now to be, even if they were poor. After all, we've seen another example of this, a Pureblood family that was arrogant despite their poverty: the Gaunts. Voldemort's grandfather and uncle regarded themselves as enviable wizards because of the purity of their blood. I have no doubt that the Malfoys would be very much like them. Narcissa is a member of the Black family and their family motto was "Toujours pur" (always pure)!

Draco wouldn't be able to taunt Ron about being poor, but he would still continue to sneer at him because he is a "blood traitor" and because he doesn't think he is very smart or talented. Ron would still be desperate to be seen as special, because he would still be the youngest of six brothers. Although some of Ron's insecurities are about his family's financial situation, it wouldn't make a difference with regard to how he feels about his own talents/abilities. He isn't the most handsome, brave, clever or funniest among them and lacks self-confidence because he has grown up in their shadow. Draco would probably continue to criticize him (about his red hair, big feet, errors in potions, etc) and because he hasn't discovered some talent that sets him apart from the rest, he would be suseptible to those attacks.

Harry liked Ron shortly after meeting him because he felt that he could relate to his upbringing (being raised with hand-me-down clothes and not having pocket money). If Ron had been wealthy they still could've been friends though. They would still share the feeling of being outcasts in their families - Harry for his magical abilities and Ron for being unremarkable when compared to his brothers. It would certainly help ease the discomfort Ron has felt over Harry being able to afford what he likes and needs because he would be able to as well. It would probably not affect the rivalry that Harry has with the Malfoy's though. Harry's first impression of Draco was negative because he reminded him strongly of his cousin Dudley, but not just because he was spoiled and indulged with what his parents were willing to buy for him. Draco revealed his belief that he and his family were better than others because they are from old wizarding families. Harry was turned off by that attitude and would still consider Draco a conceited, sneaky, coward. Harry doesn't dislike Draco because he is rich. They both are able to afford what they want, money isn't an issue to Harry. It is about the difference in their beliefs that is the cause of their rivalry.

from the action picture, i ought to ought to say ron weasley. he's so awkward... resembling me. i wanna make him smile =) plus i'm a sucker for redheads. xD from the e book, i ought to absolutely say harry potter or between the weasley twins. harry potter cuz he's so solid, and between the twins cuz i recognize how their humor is portrayed.

It wouldn't change if their personalities were still the same.

Who Cares? The books have been written, and they're fiction. If you want to waste your time in pointless speculate about character changes, be my guest; but must you inflict your nonsense on others?
