Mexico has given the world a vibrant culture, beautiful woman and great tasting foods. However, Mexicans in the U.S. particulary, expect others to speak Spanish so they don't have have to. Most don't even care about becoming citizens. They raise their kids to be loyal only to Mexico. Yet, they make people feel that you are in their country. Could it be because Mexico borders the U.S. and they can always go back or they feel the U.S. owes them for talking their land and giving them peanuts for it. What do you think?

I think its because the illegal immigrants from Mexico sneak over here and since they are too lazy to go through the proper channels to become citizens of this country, they can just take the shortcut again and gives the US the ol screw you again and says we dont respect your language, your country, your land, your people and were only here for free handouts. They disgust me!

As a person who has taught ESOL (English as a Second Language) to adult immigrants I can assure you that most value learning English and view it as a way to achieve a greater quality of life once they are here in the US. Also most people want to be able to function in our society as an American, that is why they are here. Not being able to speak the language completely prevents that from happening... One thing most Americans take for granted is the time it takes for a person to become fluent in speaking English, especially if they are an adult, and if they have never studied the language before. Also most Americans don't have the patience to talk to someone learning the language - in other words if a person is stumbling or pausing to find the right word we get all pissed off and think the person is stupid, when that is far from the truth.

Maybe if we took the time to actually learn other languages we would have a greater understanding of what it takes. No one can go to another country and learn the language overnight - It takes a long time - at least 700 hours usually more of instruction.

As far as loyalty to Mexico and the concern about land, you may be talking about an extremist view. We tend to focus on extremist views in this country, and a lot of times that prevents us from seeing the big picture. Maybe you live close to the border and have had some bad experiences?

Just think about this issue a little bit more in depthly.

First off, I'm Mexican. I was born in East LA. And, as you can tell, I speak perfect English. I watch House and Law and Order:SVU. I consider myself pretty integrated into the American culture. But no necessarily assimilated. Assimilation implies losing a little part of yourself in order to be like all the others, to be the same. The Mexican culture is a very proud one. And the nationalism is a little hard to completely forfeit once you have been raised being proud to be a Mexican. I mean, I support the United States. I plan to vote when I'm 18. But, I also celebrate the Mexican Independence Day. And I'm rooting for Mexico in the soccer game between the US and Mexico tonight.

English is not the language of the United States of America...it just happens to be spoken the most. It is up for grabs.

Assimilate to what...southern culture, western culture, the culture of Berkeley, New York culture...too many OLD cultures...lots to choose from.

But I see what you're saying. I think most don't want to be in the US but its the only rational thing. I say hold Mexico accountable for the poor living conditions of its people. We need to start charging them for all the illegals we send back.

They migrate to areas where all they need is Spanish to get by (I guess you could say like Chinatowns for Mexicans?) so often many of them never have a need to use English. The collision occurs when they're outside their neighborhoods and are unable to communicate.
