Depending on your doctor they may want to wait, just to make sure the baby is fully developed enough to where they can determine the sex. I'm 23 weeks and i just found out the sex of my child last week. But sure enough they were able to point the sex organs right out to me, because it was clear enough. So they may just want to wait, to be sure.

If they do an ultrasound at the first prenatal visit then they may be able to tell the sex depending on the size and position of baby. Typically ultrasounds arent done at the first visit so you may have to wait a few more weeks for you have an ultrasound.
Babys sex organs are usually fully developed by 15 weeks

Most likely they will have you wait, specifically b/c it's your first prenatal visit there are a lot of forms to fill out, and if you're not scheduled for one on that visit, then they usually don't just preform them. Anywhere from 18 weeks to 24 weeks is when they schedule an appt for an ultrasound. And usually the sex is determinded at that appt. Be patient and enjoy each milestone...i know it's tough, but you'll be finding out soon enough!

They usually do make you wait for 20 wks when you have your scheduled ultrasound at the time.
If you have an ultrasound earlier than that you can ask to know the babies sex and see if they'll tell you.
With my first baby we didn't our insurance didn't cover the cost of ultrasounds(so we would have had to pay at least $300.00 for each ultrasound from our own pocket) so we figured that since everything was going fine with the pregnancy we'd just wait it out 'til the end of the 9months to find out what it was. But I had complications in near the end of the 7th month and we had to have ultrasounds to make sure baby was alright in there. At that time I figured since we were in the room in the middle of the first ultrasound I could ask the woman who was giving me the ultrasound for the baby's sex, she said no, she had to have doctors permission first to tell me because this was a ultrasound to only check up on baby's health not one of those ultrasounds to discover baby's sex. Luckily the dr. said yes and we found out it was a girl but then not even a full week later I had the baby anyway.
My second, I had complications with also, but this time much earlier into the pregnancy. So on one of my routine check ups for ultrasound when I was 14wks along I asked to know the sex and this time this different woman adminstering the ultrasound gave no hesitation and told me it was a girl(I had this baby two months early)

So mainly, it just depends on who is giving you the ultrasound, on what their decision will be on giving you the baby's sex early or making you wait.

Probably make you wait to 20. If they don't know for sure you are better off waiting. One of my close friends had an ultrasound a few weeks early thought she was having a girl we had the baby shower and about 34 weeks had another and guess what it was a boy.

Ultrasound info on baby's gender is at best an educated guess by how genitalia is presenting - is not 100% accurate. Is the same for 16 weeks or at 20 weeks.

Generally they will tell you that they have scheduled the ultrasound... if only because they will want you to come in with a full bladder. If they haven't done this, they probably aren't planning to do the ultrasound this visit. You can call up your doctor and see if they would consider moving it forward... keep in mind that an ultrasound will not always reveal the sex if the baby is not positioned conveniently.

My doctor does ultrasounds with every visit and they still didn't even look for gender until the 20 week exam. The longer you wait, the more accurate the results are, so be patient.
