I am looking into raising some cattle this summer and outside of the materials for fencing, the price of the feed, and paying for the cattle are there any tips that I should know before starting.

Don't forget about getting inoculations for the cattle. They have to be done at certain times and then there is sometimes a waiting period before they can be sold/slaughtered.

There are a lot of things you have to learn first. How much acreage do you have? Do you already have a good vet that specializes in livestock? What breed of cattle? Is it for dairy, meat, or show? What part of the country do you live in? You have to consider climate. You need a barn for them. Many breeds can't be left out in bad weather. You have to inoculate them against diseases and parasites. There is a lot to having a cattle ranch, even a small one.

Depending on what you are raising them for would depend on what breed of animal you would want.
They are have similar requiremnts for vet care and shots and worming but if you are raising them for beef or milk there are many products you can not give to them. If they are raised for food many of the wormers can not be given.
Depending on where you are lovated will make a difference on if you need shelter or not and will make the choice on what you feed or not. Also what food are readily available in your arean and if they are normally fed to cattle.
There is alot to know about raising them and what diseases they can get and carry and pass on.
You should check with maybe your county extension office and see what info they have available to you. That would a good place to start.
Good luck with cattle. They are a lot of work but we keep one or two a year for our own meat source.

You should know cattle's anatomy and how to bag feed and administer pills. This is important if any of your cattle get sick- you'll need to know how to give them electrolytes and sometimes bolus tabs. Also I'd learn how to rope. This is in case you need to vaccinate, treat thrush, or brand your cattle.

Some things I can think of would be not to buy bulls (unless you want to breed) and we use electric fence so that our cattle don't bust through the wire. GOOD LUCK!!!
