They work in a funeral home and is elected to be county coroner to go and pronounce people dead at the scene without having to be at the hospital with a doctor.

a coroner is usually an elected public officer whose principal duty is to inquire by an inquest into the cause of any death which there is reason to suppose is not due to natural causes- basically he's a medical examiner.

It's a publicly elected official who examines deaths that aren't due to natural causes, although he (usually) doesn't do the actual medical examination part of the investigation, just the administrative parts.
Kind of like the sheriff who is elected and doesn't actually get out on the street to do the law enforcement.
