The only thought I can come up with currently, is that if everyone were to pay on a flat rate taxation schedule, the poor (me) could not aford to live at all. My father in-law spends more in his monthly living expenses than I make in five years. He is not "Rich," but is definitely on the upper end of the "middle class" pay scale. He can aford to pay more. Life's not fair. Neither is taxation.

Why wouldn't you just question why there are different tax brackets? What does labor supply elasticity have to do with it? Teachers still can make $50,000 a year when there are tons of them, however a plumber makes the same when they are impossible to find. They each have opposite labor supply elasticity, but are taxed the same.
